Urban Climate Index

The Urban Climate Index from Neometrico ranks areas of a city by the climate of a given month. It combines Landsat land surface temperature on urban ground with air, humidity, rain and wind from official stations. It is not a liveability index and not a property ranking.

What it measures

  • Landsat land surface temperature on urban ground, for a named month.
  • Air temperature from the nearest official station that has that reading.
  • Humidity, rain and wind from that same station.
  • A published score for that month’s cut. In a hot month, lower is more comfortable.

What it does not measure

  • A liveability or quality of life index.
  • A ranking of where to buy a home.
  • The weather still coming. That is TrueWind.
  • Schools, clinics or danger zones. Exposure sits on Smart Cities, not in this score.

Where the data come from

Surface is Landsat land surface temperature. Thermal resolution is about 100 metres; the supporting bands are 30 metres. The month is a composite of the usable passes, not thirty daily readings.

Pixels are clipped to urban land in OpenStreetMap: residential, commercial, industrial, retail.

Air, humidity, rain and wind come from that country’s official station network — the national meteorological service. Each zone takes the nearest station that has that variable. There is no interpolated humidity or rain surface.

Today the published cuts use Landsat. Other missions enter only when a cut asks for them.

Scale

Neighbourhood polygons, and metro municipalities, are two cuts.

They never share a table or a URL.

A green edge of rice, lagoon or market garden can still remain after the urban clip. That heat is ranked. It is not crowned as a place to live.

How to read the score

The score is month-specific. In a hot month, lower is more comfortable.

Each input is standardized across the zones of that cut (a z-score). Land surface temperature has weight 1. Air has weight 0.4. Humidity has weight 0.3. Rain has weight −0.15.

A cold month would need its own published rule. None is published yet.

First published city: València. August stays as August when a later month arrives.

A city enters when it has neighbourhood polygons, at least one official station with data in that month, and usable Landsat. No empty world map.

What is the Urban Climate Index?

It is Neometrico’s monthly ranking of city zones by climate: Landsat land surface temperature on urban ground, plus air, humidity, rain and wind from official stations. It is not a liveability index.

What is the difference between surface temperature and air temperature?

Surface is Landsat land surface temperature on the ground. Air is what the official station measures. They are two magnitudes. The index uses both. It does not treat them as one heat island class.

Which satellite?

Published cuts use Landsat land surface temperature. Thermal resolution is about 100 metres; the supporting bands are 30 metres. The month is a composite of usable passes, not thirty daily readings.

Which weather stations?

Why can a green edge win a city?

After the urban clip, rice, lagoon or market garden can still remain in a polygon. That zone can lead the heat ranking. The index ranks heat. It does not crown a place to live.

Does this index say where to buy a home?

No. The index ranks the climate of one month. Rent, schools and the property market sit outside this reading.
